To celebrate Earth Day, have you been considering ways to go green around your house? Don’t forget about the bathroom! We create a great deal of waste in such a small space. From the plastic used to contain our hygiene products to the amount of water we use, there are several ways we can all improve. Read on to learn more about how you can make your bathroom routine more eco-friendly!
- Make Smarter Toothbrush Choices
- Reduce Your Water Usage
- Switch to Non-Antibacterial Hand Soap
You should be switching out your toothbrush about every three months. If you’re using the common plastic toothbrushes, this can create a great deal of waste. Fortunately, there are several eco-friendly alternatives. One of the most common is the bamboo toothbrush. The handle is composed of all-natural bamboo rather than plastic. Additionally, recycled aluminum and beechwood toothbrushes are on the rise. If you prefer plastic toothbrushes or if you use an electric toothbrush, be on the lookout for recycling programs that can reuse your old toothbrush and brush heads for something else, like building a playground!
It’s easy to be mindless about the amount of water we use. When you’re brushing your teeth, remember to turn the water off while you brush. Once you’re ready to rinse your mouth out, use a small cup to fill with water rather than letting the faucet run. Another water-reducing idea is to turn the water off in the shower while you lather your hair and body then turning it back on to rinse off.
Sounds crazy, right? The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found that there is not enough evidence to prove that antibacterial soap cleans your hands significantly better than non-antibacterial hand soap. In fact, most antibacterial soaps contain Triclosan—a potentially harmful ingredient believed to cause bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics. The less chemicals we contribute to our water supplies and the environment, the better!
